No one ever needed to text a password during Prohibition.

Chicago’s history with Prohibition is known worldwide, and one of the reasons tourists and locals alike seek out speakeasy-style bars. These taverns often have doors behind bookshelves, entrances through alleys, or a password to gain admission.

This map hasn’t gotten much attention since the pandemic, so we’ve added six new bars to the list, including a rooftop spot at a music venue, a bar whose entrance is through a record shop, and a bar above a beloved coffee shop.
