CHICAGO — Two Columbus statues that were controversially removed from local parks will not be returned to their original locations — but one of them will go on display elsewhere while being replaced in the park by a monument honoring Chicago’s Italian American community.

City officials in July 2020 removed Christopher Columbus statues from Grant Park and Arrigo Park after the monuments attracted protests and calls for their removal. The removals caused blowback among some Chicagoans, including the Joint Civic Committee of Italian Americans, which filed a lawsuit over the Arrigo Park statue removal.
