HUMBOLDT PARK — Inside his Humboldt Park apartment, Herminio Rodríguez smiled broadly as he recalled one of his photography adventures in Puerto Rico in 2018.

“I got to the place, and this guy showed up with a machete, and it was totally dark,” he said. “I went into this abandoned factory and saw horses and chickens.”

After photographing the old factory and the animals, Rodríguez noticed a hidden ramp to the building and realized why it was being guarded by the machete-wielding man. It had been turned into an illegal drug den, a not-uncommon second life for abandoned buildings, he said. He
