WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – The U.S. Senate Education Committee debated legislation Wednesday that would broaden the definition of antisemitism for the U.S. Department of Education to use when investigating discrimination and harassment allegations.
“The bill protects Jewish students from antisemitic acts,” U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) who chairs the committee, said during the markup.
Cassidy said the measure is even more important after the Israel-Hamas war broke out and protests against it erupted on college campuses.
“Students were harassed and attacked simply because they were Jewish,” Cassidy said.
U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) argued the legislation could criminalize criticism of Israel.
