Uptown Day Care Closing After 35 Years Due To Building Leaks, Massive Dispute Over Rent

UPTOWN — For more than 35 years, A Step Ahead Learning Center has been a locally owned, affordable day care option for Uptown families. 

But owner Tanneh “TJ” Parker is now closing her doors after years of building woes that she said the landlord wouldn’t fix, coupled with an expensive legal dispute over rent. 

Parker’s mother opened A Step Ahead Learning Center in the 1980s and moved it to its current location at 4208 N. Broadway around 1989, Parker said. Parker took over the business after her mother died in 2013, she said.
