Valpo man dies in Lake Michigan after trying to retrieve boat

PORTER COUNTY, Ind. — A Northwest Indiana man died Monday in Lake Michigan after his boat drifted from the shore.

Authorities received a 911 call shortly after 11:30 a.m. that a man, later identified as Michael Burnes, 67, of Valparaiso, had gone under the water approximately 60 yards from the shore.

Authorities learned Barnes was fishing and left the shore near Burns Ditch in an effort to retrieve his drifting boat.

Multiple private fishing vessels began searching the area along with a park ranger, conversation officers, the Coast Guard and the Lake County Sheriff’s Department.
