LINCOLN SQUARE — Retailers in the heart of Lincoln Square have experienced a drop in sales during the neighborhood’s construction-mandated experiment in car-free living, according to a new survey by an area chamber.

The 4700 block of North Lincoln Avenue has been temporarily closed to traffic since last week as part of construction to upgrade the Western Avenue Brown Line station, a nearby public plaza and a parking lot. The car-free zone was originally slated to end last week, but the closure is now stretching into May.

While some neighbors love the car-free zone, retailers told Block Club they’re worried about the disruption hurting their bottom line.
